Do Be Polite
- Dress neatly and smartly.
- Speak politely.
- Be self-disciplined.
- Have a sense of humour.
- Greet one another with a smile.
- Say 'Hello' ,’Hi' in informal situations.
- Say "Good morning", "How do you do" In formal situations.
- Use the 'affectionate' names in family: dear, dearie, flower, love, chick, honey or treacle.
- Take a gift for the host and hostess: bottle of wine, bunch of flowers or chocolates.
- Send thank you notes for invitations.
- Eat with fork in the left hand and a knife in the right.
- Do stand in line.
- Wait patiently for your turn boarding a bus.
- Never push in front in queues.
- Take your hat off when you go indoors (men only).
- Say "Excuse Me": If someone is blocking your way and you would like them to move, say excuse me and they will move out of your way.
- Pay for drinks as you order them in pubs and other types of bars.
- Say "Please" and "Thank you".
- Cover your mouth with your hand when yawning or coughing.
- Shake people’s right hand with your own right hand if you are first introduced to someone.
- If you accidentally bump into someone, say "Sorry".
- Drive on the left side of the road.
- Open doors for either a man or a woman.
- Do not greet people with a kiss.
- Kiss people who are close friends and relatives.
- Avoid talking loudly in public.
- Do not stare at anyone in public.
- Respect others’ privacy.
- Do not ask a lady her age.
- It is considered impolite to ask a lady her age.
- Do not pick your nose in public.
- If your nostrils need de-bugging, use a handkerchief.
- Avoid doing gestures such as backslapping and hugging. This is only done among close friends.
- Do not spit.
- Do not burp in public.
- Cover your mouth with your hand when you burp and say "Excuse me" afterwards.
- Do not pass wind in public.
- Do not speak with your mouth full of food.
- Do not ask personal or intimate questions.
- Please do not ask questions such as "How much money do you earn?" "How much do you weigh?" or "Why aren't you married?".
- Never eat off a knife when having a meal.
