IELTS Writing Sample: Music
Music is played in every society and culture in the world today. Some people think that music brings only benefits to individuals and societies. Others, however, think that music can have a negative influence on both.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Nowadays music has become a part all the people’s lives around the world and can be regarded as impacting individuals only in a positive way by some people while the others reckon that music can have a destructive effect on a person or society.
It is thought, that the language of music is comprehensible to everybody, regardless of the nationality, race, mother tongue or social status. So, it can become a unifying factor for different groups of people, unite separated societies through the love for music, which doesn't have borders. Another positive aspect is a salutary effect on person’s health, well-being, and mood. Beautiful classical music can help relax, improve mood, evoke deep emotions, remind pleasant memories or dreams, cause happy feelings and can make you feel happier or hopeful. Moreover, it is believed, that music reproduction near the crop plants or pothouse plants can induce its fast growth and development.
On the other hand, it is often thought, that music can affect people in a negative way. Indeed, particular music can have a harmful impact on those people, who have a sensibility to an influence or have a tendency to disruptive behavior or feelings and thoughts (the most vulnerable group — teenagers). Music lyrics may contain incitement to violence or committing crimes, encouraging using drugs, it may evoke suicidal thoughts. Certain rhythm and the monotonous repetition of the parts of music are believed to be harmful to the mental state, and high loudness may cause hearing damages.
To my mind, music brings more benefits to people, than harmful effects. Not without grounds, people like to listen to music and they do this everywhere — at home, in their jobs, in their cars, while doing sports and walking. Music helps to relax and have a good time, improve mood and health. I believe, people should listen to classical music more or any other harmonic and well-balanced music in order to prevent possible negative impacts.
