other + plural noun/ others with no plural noun = additional thing or person of the same type as one mentioned, discussed or is known about.

The labourers built the great pyramids and other monuments of Pharaonic Egypt.

Some of these methods will work. Others will not.

other + plural noun/ others with no plural noun = different to already mentioned things or people.

They will then have more money to spend on other things.

Some people prefer comfort, others can live without it.


other + uncountable noun=more of the group being mentioned.

There is other fruit besides apples in the fridge.

other + singular noun = at the end of a list of examples, to refer generally to people or things like the ones just mentioned.

in negation or pre-quantifying = a thing or person is not the one already mentioned, but a different one.

Place them in a jam jar, porcelain bowl, or other similar container.

The authorities insist that the discussions must not be linked to any other issue…

These apples are wormy, but the others (the other apples) on the table are good.

the other + singular noun = the last of the group being discussed or

“the remaining one of two” being discussed.

We bought five apples. We have thrown away four rotten apples. The other apple is in the fridge. Give me the other foot to try a shoe on.

the other + uncountable noun = “all the rest”

We put the apples in a bowl and stored the other fruit in the fridge.

other than = differently or different from or except.

There is no way of reaching the topother than by ladder.

each of the others = each one of the other people

Each of the others, who were still waiting for the interview, was nervous and agitated.

one other / some other = one more additional or different

Older boarders usually have their own private bedroom or share a room with just one other pupil.

every other = each alternate in a series
