"I want a barnyard," says Alice. "In my barnyard I want to have a big red cock that says 'Cock-a-doodle-doo'.

21

One brown pony for me to ride! Big ducks and little ducks that splash in the rain puddles! Big pigs and little pigs that eat and eat and eat! And a big mother hen that sits in her nest and clucks! And three old white goats that run at1 all the animals!"

Then Mother comes in.

"Now, look here,"2 she says. "I do not want a barnyard. I want a house with one little boy and one little girl. I want to say 'Good night' to that little boy and that little girl. And then do not say a wo rd. "3

Alice laughs, and Jerry laughs.

"Good night, Mother," they say.

Then Alice does not say a word. And Jerry does not say a word. Not one word!
