​The Two Carters

Comic Tale by Johann Peter Hebel

Two carters met with their carts on the narrow way. The way was so narrow that they could not pass each other. They started arguing.

1: "Drive out of the way!"

2: "No, you, drive out of the way!"

1: "I do not want!"

2: "I do not need!"

1: "Yes, but you should get out of the way!"

2: "No, I'll wait until you clear the way!"

1: "I will not clear the way. I was here first!“

2: "That's not true! I was here first!"

1: "But my cart is heavier!"

2: "My cart is much heavier than yours!"

1: (threateningly) "You, watch out! If you do not let me the way, I'll do something to you. I did that today when another carter blocked my way! "

2: (anxiously) "No, you can not do that. I want to let you the road, but you have to help me with that. First, we shall push your cart aside, then I can move on to let you the way."

1: "Good, I'll help you. I will pull forward and you will push backward. - Well, we did that. Get out of the way now! "

2: "I have cleared the way. You can drive! "

1: " Yes, now I'll ride over. Good ride!"

2: "Stop! Tell me quickly what you did today with the other carter! "

1: "Yes. The other one did not want to clear the way for me. Well, I drove him out of the way."

Die beiden Fuhrleute

Zwei Fuhrleute begegneten sich mit ihren Wagen. Der Weg war so schmal, dass sie nicht aneinander vorbeifahren konnten. Da begannen sie zu streiten.

1: „Fahre mir aus dem Wege!“

2: „Nein, fahre du mir aus dem Wege!“

1: „Ich will nicht!“

2: „Ich brauche es nicht!“

1: „Doch, du sollst aber aus dem Weg fahren!“

2: „Nein, ich warte, bis du den Weg freimachst!“

1: „Ich mache den Weg nicht frei. Ich war zuerst hier!“

2: „Das stimmt nicht! Ich war zuerst hier!“

1: „Aber mein Wagen ist so schwer!“

2: „Mein Wagen ist noch viel schwerer!“

1: (drohend) „Du, pass auf! Wenn du mir nicht aus dem Weg fährst, dann mache ich etwas mir dir. Das habe ich heute auch schon mit einem anderen Fuhrmann gemacht!“

2: (ängstlich) „Nein, das – das kannst du doch nicht machen. Ich will dir ja gern ausweichen, aber du musst mir dabei helfen. Zuerst schieben wir deinen Wagen etwas zur Seite, dann kann ich dir aus dem Weg fahren.“

1: „Gut, ich helfe dir. Ich ziehe vorn und du schiebst hinten. – So, das haben wir geschafft. Fahre jetzt aus dem Weg!“

2: „Ich habe den Weg freigemacht. Du kannst fahren!“

1: „Ja, jetzt komme ich vorbei. Gute Fahrt!“

2: „Halt! Erzählte mir noch schnell, was du heute mit dem andern Fuhrmann gemacht hast!“

1: „Ja. Der andere wollte mir den Weg nicht freimachen. Nun, da fuhr ich ihm aus dem Wege.“
