As if / As though: Drill

As if / as though in real or possible situations

Any tense according to the context is used.

1. Mila is looking around, as if she is searching for something.

2. But it does not look as if it can get very far.

3. His eyes were red as if he has not slept at all.

4. I feel as if I am in a kind of hostage situation.

5. It looks as if compulsory professional training for drivers will soon become a reality.

6. It seems as if we are talking about two different documents.

7. You look as if you’ve seen a ghost!

8. When I talk to my sister, it’s as if she’s not even listening to me.

9. Look at those dark clouds. It looks as if it’s going to rain.

10. My goodness those children are loud! It’s sounds as if there’s a herd of animals running around upstairs.

11. It was great to see my ex-husband again. It sounds as if he’s doing well in life.

12. Is something bothering you? You look as if you haven’t slept in days!

13. My friend is under a lot of pressure at the moment. She feels as if she has the weight of the world on her shoulders.

14. I am living my life as if I will die tomorrow.

15. It seems as though every celebrity is coming out with their own scent these days.

As if / as though in unreal or impossible situations

If the action of the main clause is simultaneous with the as if-clause action non perfect pasts are used in the as if-clause.

1. She always scolds them as if they were her own children.

2. What an odd woman. She speaks to her cat as if it were a person.

3. My uncle stared at me as if he did not understand what I was saying.

4. She must feel as if she were receiving a bouquet of flowers.

5. My boss listened as if he were interested, but he was sure to be thinking about something.

6. They were running so fast as if they were trying to catch a leaving train.

7. We laughed as if it was the funniest joke we had ever heard!

8. I'm not a child, but sometimes you talk to me as if I were a child.

9. He behaves as if he were a famous politician.

10. When her son fell and bumped his head, he screamed as if he was dying or something.

11. His foster mother is a wonderful woman, and he loves her as much as if she were his birth mom.

If the action of the as if-clause is prior to the action of the main clause perfect pasts are used in the as if-clause.

1. I felt as if I had received a blow! – I did not expect her to be so rude.

2. You look grave and mysterious, as if you had heard something strange?

3. I heard the weapon collide resonantly, as if it had hit some hard substance.

4. He made one step forward, and then drew back as if she had seen a snake.

5. He looked so feeble as if he hadn't eaten for days.

6. He told me about the accident in tiny detail as if he had seen it with his own eyes.

7. The flowers on the hill looked as though they had been painted with various colors.
