Rider and his Dog

Comic tale by Jörg Wickram

A rider came in a tavern in the evening. He had a big dog with him the dog was very dirty.

At dinner, the rider threw something to his dog to eat: a piece of bread, a piece of meat or a bone. The innkeeper observed this and thought to himself: "The rider should pay me for that."

After some time, the landlord came and wanted to collect the money for the food and the night. He said to the rider: "Guest, you have to pay twice, once for you and once for your dog, because you threw so much to him, bread, meat and other things."

The rider smiled and replied: “I shall do what I have to" and paid for himself and for his dog.

The landlord was satisfied and led the rider into a particularly beautiful bedroom with two beautiful beds. He thought, "The rider paid twice. He should sleep well for that.’ He wished the guest a good night.

But the rider thought, "I paid for myself and for my dog. That's why the dog should lie well. "He called his dog and let him dirty lie in the best bed. The dog scrambled onto the bed and made himself comfortable.

In the morning the innkeeper saw the scratched and soiled bed. He immediately ran to the judge and sued the rider. The judge heard the rider’s tale. The rider said: "If I have paid twice for myself and my dog, then the dog can lie well." The judge laughed and said to the innkeeper: "The rider is right. I advise that you never again take money for a dog. “
